There is a very simple formula for successful and cost effective knotweed management: the more time you can allocate to dealing with the knotweed problem means the more options are available for its treatment.  Leaving it to the last minute on a construction project, for instance, means few options to choose from – and those that are available will be expensive and probably non-sustainable (such as ‘dig and dump’).  So contacting us for advice on knotweed management at the early stages of planning should be a prerequisite on any development project.

Be careful of accepting promises of ‘quick eradication’ using herbicides.  Some such programmes could produce lasting results but most do not.  If knotweed is hit too hard with chemicals it can retreat into dormancy, producing no new growth for a season or two before springing vigorously back into life.  The misuse of residual herbicides (such as Picloram) can produce similar misleading results.  There are some programmes that promise to be short-term but are actually more long-term than they initially appear.  Always read the ‘small print’, make sure you know what you are buying and always use a company you can trust.  Remember, if it sounds too good to be true there is a distinct chance that it is.

Wreford reject the ‘one size fits all’ philosophy of providing treatment options.  Our programmes are individually tailored to suit the requirements of each site and client.  We will often utilise a ‘combined treatment’ approach, using several different and complimentary techniques on a single site.  We will endeavour to provide sustainable, on-site solutions wherever feasible and all our operations adhere to the Environment Agency’s 2006 Knotweed Code of Practice

We supply a comprehensive choice of bespoke options for the smaller client with prices to suit. Applying herbicide to knotweed growing in a domestic garden can give rise to concerns from the owner.  Wreford utilise a variety of different application methods to minimise the impact the herbicide will have on surrounding plants and vegetation and will choose the technique, or combination of techniques, most appropriate to each location.  We liaise closely with our clients to ensure our visits are as convenient as possible and we use chemicals that will have little or no impact on health within hours of application.  In the interests of safety, however, pets and children should be kept clear of the area during and immediately following herbicide application.

Wreford Limited has:

  • Employers & Public Liability insurance to £10 million
  • Professional Indemnity insurance
  • Contractor’s All-Risk insurance
  • CIS 5 Certificate
  • Waste Carrier’s License

All our herbicide operatives have, as a minimum, NPTC Pa1 and Pa6 certificates.

All our site staff have CSCS cards and all plant operators have CITB (or equivalent) certificates.

Tree and Scrub Clearance – Wreford can also carry out a range of tree and clearance works.  This enables us to clear development sites in preparation for construction works to begin, in conjunction with treating areas infected with knotweed, so reducing cost, saving time and preventing the risk of knotweed being accidentally spread by clearance operations.  We can also offer tree and clearance works as a service independent of knotweed contracts.

* Times given are approximate and will vary depending upon site conditions and the time of year the programme commences.
